WELCOME to the online home of Gary D. Cole, author of the novel Black Box and the memoir Artless as well as theater entrepreneur, producer, and playwright.   We invite you to learn about Gary and his books, both of which explore the power, pleasure, and pain of the performing arts.  Gary has agreed to donate all rights to Black Box to CoHo Productions, the Portland, Oregon theater company he co-founded, in honor of CoHo’s 25th anniversary season and to support the company’s work in the CoHo Theater, the black box on which the theater at the heart of the novel is based.

Praise for Gary’s Books

Black Box is a nicely paced tale, told with insight and affection for both the theater and the suspense genre – a nifty mash-up of Ibsen, Shakespeare, and Mickey Spillane.”

Paul Frellick, Deep Dish Theater Company Artistic Director

“His unforgettably honest and eye-opening memoir, Artless, is an engrossing encounter [and a] stunning read ….”  Leonard Jacobs, Backstage

A “fascinating story ….”  The Oregonian (reviewing Artless)
